south, past fig trees and a meadow, to vineyards and a small lake

beyond. The terraces, one south-facing and one under vines against

the west wall of the house, make splendid spaces for lounging in

the sun or long, indulgent lunches in dappled shade. The

centrepiece of the garden is the private heated swimming pool and

its neighbouring pool house, the natural spot for an

apéritif before dinner or a quiet morning coffee before

anyone else has stirred. The scale and layout of the house means

there’s always room to find a secluded corner to read or

snooze and, for those in need of a little extra privacy,

there’s a separate guest annexe around 20m from the main

house. You could have a very special family celebration here, with

ample space and plenty to entertain the younger ones with table

tennis, boules, croquet and badminton all in your own garden. Le

Masgrès feels wonderfully tucked away, but it’s just

5km from picturesque medieval Lauzerte, one of several ‘plus

beaux villages de France’ in the local area. And if you have

a range of different age groups to entertain, there’s no

shortage of activities including tennis and horse riding at

Lauzerte and bike hire and lake swimming at Moncuq, around half an

hour away by car. For art lovers and history fans, there are almost

countless medieval towns to discover, including Montauban, the

oldest bastide town in France and the Gothic splendour of Albi,

birthplace of the artist Toulouse-Lautrec whilst Moissac has a

beautiful 12th-century world-famous cloister to admire. Charming
