rooms and dining areas, it’s ideal for two couples or a

appliance imaginable, including a La Canche stove – one of

only seven made worldwide. A long list of optional extras come

packaged with this beautiful property, from French lessons to

cookery classes, a half-day château excursion (some of the

Loire’s most famous are close by) to a private tour of the

Cadre Noir – École Nationale d’Equitation, the

world’s finest equestrian centre – you’ll notice

images of horses throughout the town. Foodies will also find plenty

of delights on their doorstep, including celebrated restaurants, a

tempting selection of chocolate and cake shops for which Saumur is

renowned, and an abundance of wine merchants – a chance to

sample the reds, whites and rosés from the surrounding

vineyards, themselves worth a visit. Bike hire, horse trails, a

lake for swimming and sailing and hot air ballooning can also be

found close to Saumur. For a culture dose, take a stroll around the

14th-century château, one of the notorious Marquis de

Sade’s many residences and home to the French Cavalry Academy

since 1763. There’s also a museum and some interesting

12th-century cave dwellings in the cliffs overlooking the Loire. A
